Comments on Filoplume Feather

i) Filoplumes are small, delicate and hair-like feathers.

ii) These are found sparsely distributed all over the body.

iii) It consists of a short calamus having inferior umbilicus at its proximal end.

iv) The rachis is long and thread -like having a few weak barbs and barbules at its free tip.

v) The actual function is not known.

Comments on Down feather

i) Down feathers are small, soft & wooly feathers.

ii) These are found all over the body in young birds.

iii) Each down feather consists of a calamus and a few long barbs.

iv) The calamus is short and rachis is entirely absent.

v) Numerous barbs arise as a tuft from top of the calamus.

vi) Barbs are long and flexible with short & rudimentary barbels.
